Thank-you for the guidance relating to “allowing difficulty” and “bringing a problem to mindfulness practice”. It’s something to get more comfortable with in my own practice. Appreciate this lesson!
Ahhh…I'm ingesting all you shared; that was awesome; I loved your Summaries of previous chapters, for effect, your soft voice; thank you for your Hard Work in doing this for us, as I just recalled your voice with a smile! Also loved your gentle reminders of the Directing & Not directing, Doing vs. Being, the Metaphors are Key Pluses too, etc. So much to digest, I'll come back again:)
Balance is definitely key. Being open to being the greatest student as you guide through silence and space, attitude and the quality. Guidance through suggestion and invitation, nurturing process and balance between being and doing mode. Noticing internal processes such as mood, thoughts, worries or physical sensations. Introspective language crucial to leading the student to their own awareness.
For beginner mindfulness students, breathe and sound work well. Many people who come to mindfulness need guidance to turn attention inwards and become aware of what are subtle experiences. Sometimes the body can sense what the body is not aware of. As we learn about our students through listening and watching we can make the suggestions via selective language and metaphors to go deeper into their own self learning. Love the metaphor of being a good parent to ourselves as well as our students. Invaluable skill in how mindfulness can support our students to discover the tools to become their own teachers and then provide them the space to find their own answers and ways forward. So empowering!
Paradox between what it is and what it can be confusing when in doing mode yet so profound in being mode!By developing attitudes of openness, acceptance and kindness helps create space for new perspectives. The gift is the transition from the cushion into our lives.
I think I would need more inviting phrases in my guiding meditations, I will translate the scripts almost the same to keep them as they are, so I can keep the inviting parts.
I realize how important is the sound as a bridge, I believe the attention in the breath is very powerful for keep the concentration and coming back to the body instead of the wondering mind. As I teach with the primordial sound meditation, I have experienced impact in the mind of the subtle sound when meditating. Just focusing in a sound is relaxing and profound in the experience of being, sensing, simple and focused on the process. It´s kind of fun but also very subtle and refined experience.
Something also very important, is the fact of staying curious for "noticing something else", being aware, because we usually tend to jump into the first impression and keep with that.
Finally, I find the metaphors a very gently way to introduce something new, you usually remember them and I think it is a very easy way to meditate without guidance, once you have learned them.
This lesson gave me clarity on the teacher student relationship and the importance of the teacher acting as a guide to the the student. It is significant for the student to use his/her own intuition when dealing with challenges.
I experienced this personally as a student when interacting with my own spiritual advisor. During the beginning sessions with my spiritual advisor I wondered why she wouldn’t just give me the answers. Now it all makes sense. Over time I developed the mindfulness skills that helped me discover my own power and to trust my own instincts.
As a mindfulness teacher I’d like to do the same for my students. Thank you for this lesson.
Doing versus being. I absolutely struggle with this personally….not having a 'goal' is hard for me. Part of why I am so enjoying my own Mindfulness journey. 🙂 Thank you for your continuous guidance!!
"The more we let things be, the more they are able to change". That is what stuck out most for me. Sometimes being in the doing mode and always trying to fix things things ends up in us chasing our own tails. I also really appreciate that each previous chapter is briefly revisited, always keeping the information fresh.
Thank you for the insightful lesson. It helped me to see how I sometimes want to “Do” rather than “Be”.

What a great overview of what to expect and how to guide mindfulness.
I love all of the examples you share.
