Certification Tips and FAQs

Are you ready to submit your material for certification, or unsure where to even begin? On this page, we review the certification requisites in more detail and answer some of the most frequently asked questions.

The Meditation Log

Meditation Log FAQs:

What are you looking for in the meditation log?

The meditation log should include 40+ recorded hours of formal mindfulness practice. Along with the dates, times, types of practice, and length of each, we would like to see details about what specific meditations you are listening to. Self-guided practice is also welcome, but please tell us about it and make notes in the log. You should also be regularly recording reflections and insights related to whatever might have come up during your practice.

What type of meditations can I include in my meditation log?

We understand that many students of this program will have experience with other types of meditation and practices; however, for this course, we require that your 40 hours of logged meditation are formal mindfulness practices (or practices aligned with those included in this program, such as loving-kindness meditation). Please do not include other types of meditations (i.e. mantra, visualization, relaxation, yoga nidra) or practices (i.e. yoga) within your meditation log. If you are unsure if a particular practice can be included or want some examples, read more about this requirement here or reach out to us and we'd be happy to help.

Can I keep a meditation journal rather than fill out the log?

We ask that you use the log provided to tally your meditation reflections and time spent practicing. However, you can replicate this log if you wish to, either writing it out by hand or in a Word document. In either case, it should still be organized in the same way so that your minutes and hours of practice can be easily calculated and your reflections easily reviewed.

Do I need to meditate on 40 consecutive days?

No, your meditations do not need to take place on 40 consecutive days. You may take as much time as you need to record a total of 40 hours or more. Meditation duration may also vary.

The Workbook & Self-Assessments

Workbook FAQs

How do I actually fill this out the workbook?

You can download the workbook to your personal computer and type your answers directly into the text boxes. Alternatively, you can open the workbook in a Google document, and complete your work there. If you’re using this method, please highlight your answers or type in a new color so we can clearly see them.

Can I complete the written requirements by hand?

Yes. If you prefer to print the workbook and self-assessment forms and fill them out by hand, you are welcome to do so. In this case, they will need to be scanned upon completion and sent to us digitally. We ask that when they are sent to us digitally, they are legible and well-organized. If we cannot read your answers or they are not organized in the correct order (preferably within one or two files), we may ask you to re-submit them accordingly.

Self-Assessment FAQs

When guiding the seven different types of meditations, do I need to follow the associated scripts?

You do not have to use the script, but you are welcome to. If using the script as a guide, we encourage you to find your own words to teach these subjects.

Do I complete the rating forms myself or do my students?

The rating forms that you will submit for certification are to be filled out by you. With that said, it is helpful to seek feedback from your students.

How many classes do I need to teach and how many rating forms do I need to submit?

There are seven types of meditations that you will need to lead prior to certification, guiding each type three times. You need to submit 7 self-assessment rubrics, one for each type of meditation. Each self-assessment rubric should show a competency rating of Competent, Proficient, or Advanced across the six domains. Read more about and/or download the self-assessment forms on their own here.

How to Guide Meditations Course

How to Guide Meditations FAQs

What materials need to be completed after I finish this course?

None. There is currently no written requirement that accompanies this workbook and video course.

Audio/Video Submissions

Audio/Video Submission FAQs

What are you looking for in the audio and/or video submissions?

Your audio and/or video submissions should exemplify your ability to teach the following four foundational principles of mindfulness.

  • non-judgment; not good or bad, right or wrong... rather: pleasant, unpleasant or neutral
  • primary emphasis on body and 5 senses
  • allowance, care and curiosity of this actual experience
  • non-reactivity; not grasping, avoiding or pushing away

These are outlined on the Certification Requisites page. Ideally, these submissions would include evidence of your ability to talk about these subjects and to weave them into guided meditation.

How long do my recordings need to be?

Please submit around 20 - 30 minutes of recordings. All points do not need to be covered within a single recording. You could submit two or three recordings of your teachings to comprise a total of 20-30 minutes (with a maximum upper limit of 60 minutes). However, we encourage you to provide an overview of all the required foundational principles within one or two of your recordings.

Do my recordings have to be of live teachings?

No. We encourage you to find real, live people to practice teach with (join our Tuesday or Thursday practice teaching sessions!). Teaching to live students either in person or online offers valuable opportunity for feedback. However, your submissions do not need to be recorded in front of a live audience.

How do I actually record or submit my meditations?

Most people use their smart phone to record their audio or video. You can then upload this file to Google Drive or Dropbox and send us the link. Please submit all the materials for certification at the same time by emailing [email protected]
