Administrators Gillian Florence Posted June 16, 2020 Administrators Share Posted June 16, 2020 Does anyone practice mantra meditation or Kirtan? I would love to know what your favourite mantras or songs are. One of my favourites is this Devi prayer: https://mindfulnessexercises.com/namaste-devi-prayer-spiritual-music/
rbryanpeterson@gmail.com
This is something I've been interested in exploring. When I was a catholic, I found the rosary to be something that appealed to me. The repetitive prayer enabled my mind to somewhat disengage and and there was more of a deeper level conscious focus on each mystery. I've been curious about mantra meditations for the same reason. I have a couple of malas that I use and have recently started doing a daily gratitude mantra. I found this: https://healingbrave.com/blogs/all/sanskrit-mantras-for-meditation-gratitude and go through each of them, using the English rather than Sanskrit. Don't know if that's a formal way of doing it, it seems to be working for me. I'd be interested in exploring others forms.
Administrators Gillian Florence Posted July 13, 2020 Author Administrators Share Posted July 13, 2020 Great resource! I find mantra repetition really grounding as well. Formal or not, if it works it works When I studied Hatha yoga, we had Kirtan every Friday. Prior to that I was more or less unfamiliar with chanting (I had done a workshop on it once many years prior). But in any case, I felt that when surrendered to, the practice was incredibly powerful. I'll share a link to the yoga school I studied with. They hold online Kirtan now on Fridays - https://www.facebook.com/LoveEvolveAwaken/ I also really love the music of Krishna Das. I'll often play it in the background while cooking.

Administrators Gillian Florence Posted November 10, 2021 Author Administrators Share Posted November 10, 2021 Hey @Daniel Charles, Great question - and it is one I don't have an authoritative answer to. My first thought is that mantra meditation would typically not be directly connected to the vipassana tradition, but I have not studied this lineage so cannot say for certain. I am curious if anyone else in this group can shed more light in response to your question.
Damodar Roe
Hi! I've been practicing mantra meditation every day since 2009, including both japa and kirtan. Japa is a non-musical repetition of the mantra to oneself, using a mala (eastern rosary) to count recitations. Kirtan is singing of the mantra in a group with musical instruments. The idea is to absorb your attention in hearing yourself prayerfully recite the mantra over and over. Here is an example of this meditation with the mantra.
